The Hanna Headband

I have this acquaintance that is a beautiful fashionista…

I saw her at a conference recently and I was WILD over her headband she was wearing. It was as if she decided to wear a boho crown that she so rightly deserved in all of her fashion glory! I have scoured the internet to try and find it and I could not find it anywhere.  I immediately set out to make one in a similar style.

At first I tried it with Bernat Home Maker Dec yarn because I love how beautiful the stitches look with that polyfil in the center.

But I knew how hard that yarn is to come by, so I set out to make it in something that’s a little more readily available. The next one I made was in cotton. But to be honest, I wasn’t a fan of it. The popcorn stitches were so much smaller and I hate the feel of cotton. Not to mention there is a limited color selection in cotton yarns.

Finally I tried acrylic yarn and it was instant success! Acrylic is the Goldilocks of all the materials I tested out for this design because the popcorn stitches aren’t too big or too small, plus there a zillion colors to choose from. I call that a win!

Pictured is acrylic (left) and Bernat Home Maker yarn (right) side by side for comparison. As you can see, the acrylic is not quite a bulky.

I made several in the color palette I chose for my vendor markets this year and I love EVERY one of them! They only take me around 20-30 minutes to make from start to finish and I have a strong feeling that they will sell well.  I am excited to be adding them to my selection this year!

I used 2 different kinds of beads in this photo. The headbands on the left are natural wooden beads, and the ones on the right are darker with some unique striping patterns on them.

Let’s make them already!

Supplies Needed:

-Approx. 30-40 yds of any ww (size 4) yarn

-Size I 5.5 mm hook, or size needed to obtain gauge

-Headband, 1" in width (I used Goody brand from Walmart, but some of my testers used these from Amazon)

-22 10 mm beads (with larger central holes for threading onto your yarn)

-Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Terms Used and Abbreviations:

Pattern is written in US terminology.

 Beginning - beg

Chain - ch

Double Crochet - dc

Fasten Off – FO

Front Loop Only - FLO

Place Bead - PB

Popcorn Stitch - PC

Repeat - rep

Single Crochet 2 Together - sc2tog

Skip - sk

Slip Stitch(es) - sl st(s)

Stitch(es) - st(s)

Space(s) - sp(s)

Special Stitches:

Place Bead- Bring bead flush to your hook, complete st as usual.

Popcorn Stitch- Make 6 dc, remove hook from working loop, insert hook from front to back in the first dc made, going behind the dc sts, bring the working yarn loop onto your hook and draw through the first dc, making sure the bulge of the st is facing you.

Gauge:

14 sc and 14 rows = 4" (10 cm)

Finished Measurements:

13.75" x 1" (35 x 2.5 cm)

Pattern Notes:

The pattern will vary slightly if you choose to use Bernat Home Maker yarn. Since it is a bit bulkier, I used a size J 6.0 mm hook and only did 5 dc in my PC sts. Since that yarn is so hard to find, I wrote the pattern using more readily available yarn.

If you wish to improvise the pattern, simply make a ch in multiples of 2 until you reach 13" (it will stretch by about 0.5") in length. To know how many beads to use, subtract 10 from your st count and then divide by 2. Then follow the overall pattern concept, keeping the beg and ending sl st count the same. Your number of PC sts will be changed but the overall st pattern should still work.

Since you will have all 22 beads on your working yarn as you crochet, simply slide them down until you need them in the pattern.

Instructions:

Thread all 22 beads onto your working yarn.

Row 1: Ch 54, sl st in the 2nd ch from hook and in next 4 sts, * PB, ch 1, sk next st, loosely sl st; rep from * until you have 4 sts remaining, sl st in last 4 sts. [31 sl sts, 22 beads]

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working in the FLO of each st across sl st in first 4 sts, ch 3, PC in next st, * ch 3, sk next beaded st, PC in next st; rep from * until you have a total of 23 PC, ch 3, sl st in last 4 sts. [8 sl sts, 24 ch-3 sps, 23 PC]

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sl st FLO in first 4 sts, * sc2tog over top 2 ch-3 sts of the next PC; rep from * until you have 4 sts remaining, sl st FLO in last 4 sts. [8 sl sts, 23 sc]

FO and weave in tails. Gently stretch your piece and make sure it is the same length as your headband. Grab your headband and carefully hot glue the piece to the top of the headband, gluing each end down first. (NOTE: There should not be a large portion of your piece hanging off the edges. You want your PC sts to really “pop”; therefore, do not glue them down flat to the top of the headband.)
