Chic Change Purse

PIN it here!

Teacher Appreciation Week is in 2 weeks and I have just one more project for you to whip up before then!

This post may contain affiliate links that help me continue to post free content. To skip the ads and have a printable pdf, you can find this pattern for relatively little cost in both my Etsy and Ravelry shops.

This project came to me when I was brainstorming about all the little gifts I could possibly make for my son’s teachers this year. It is a small token of gratitude for all the hard work and time they have invested in my son. I thought it would be useful since it is a keychain and a nice reminder of my thanks every time they used it.

The change purse requires very little by way of supplies and is super quick to whip up, making it a great last minute gift. I also definitely plan to put these adorable little change purses in my booth at my vendor market this Saturday. I have no doubt they will be a huge hit!

They are highly addictive to make, as proven by my testers who made so many in such a short time. This photo is just an example of one of my testers’ work!

Just look at what my tester Joni Joyner over at Cuppa Knots made with this pattern! Aren’t they beautiful?!

As with my last 2 blog posts about teacher appreciation gifts, I have included a cute little printable card that you can put with your change purse to give as a gift. I definitely recommend adding a gift card or possibly some money folded up inside the change purse if you’re able.

I plan to add a gift card and put both inside a small gift bag. Then I am going to punch a hole in the corner of the thank you card and tie it to the gift bag handle. Here is an example of the thank-you card. If you wish to print off the card, click here. I have included several to a page in case you wish to give out multiples.

I have decided to not do a video tutorial for this project since it uses very basic stitches, but I have done another change purse in the past and I have linked a few portions of that project to help with this one where applicable. The main part you may need help with will be sewing the bag to the kiss clasp keyring.

Without further ado, let’s make this thing!

Supplies Needed

-50-60 yds of any size 4 worsted weight yarn

-F 3.75 mm hook

-18 6 mm wooden beads with large central holes (can also use 4 mm beads)

-2" (52 mm) Kiss Clasp keychain

-Matching embroidery thread

-Mini wooden ring, 2 cm in size (optional)

-Small tapestry needle with larger eye

-Scissors, tape measure, stitch marker

Terms Used and Abbreviations

Pattern is written in US terminology.

Back Loop Only - BLO

Begin(ning) - beg

Chain - ch

Fasten off - FO

Half Double Crochet - hdc

Place Bead - PB

Place Marker - PM

Repeat - rep

Single Crochet - sc

Skip - sk

Slip Stitch - sl st

Stitch Marker - SM

Space(s) - sp(s)

Stitch(es) - st(s)

Special Stitches

Invisible sl st: Remove hook from working loop. Take working yarn tail to back of work. Insert hook from back to front in first st of round and hook working loop onto your hook. Draw working loop to back of work and continue as usual. To visualize this st, see my video.

Place Bead (PB): Slide bead flush to your hook. Complete st as usual.

Single Crochet Spike (SCS): When making round 6 repeats, place your sc sts in the ch-1 of the bead and into the sc st below the bead. This will prevent the beads from moving to the inside of the bag. You will need to insert your hook into the ch st first; then going behind the bead, insert your hook into the sc st below. YO, pull up a tall loop and finish the sc as usual. See photos below.

Gauge

Diameter should measure approx. 2.25" (5.7 cm) across after completing Rounds 1-3.

Finished Measurements

Purse should measure approx. 2.25" (5.7 cm) in diameter and 3" (7.6 cm) in height.

Pattern Notes

-Thread all 18 beads onto your working yarn and slide them down as you go until needed.

-Beg chs do not count as a st throughout.

-The first st of every round is always the same st as joining unless otherwise specified.

Instructions

Purse is made in the round from the bottom up, sewing to the kiss clasp last.

Round 1: Beg by threading all 18 beads onto your working yarn. Ch 3, 10 hdc in 3rd ch from hook. Join with a sl st in first hdc. [10 hdc]

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st in first hdc. [20 hdc]

Round 3: Ch 2, * 2 hdc, 1 hdc; rep from * around. Join with an Invisible sl st in first hdc. [30 hdc]

Gauge check: Diameter should measure approx. 2.25" (5.7 cm) across. If yours measures differently, adjust hook size accordingly and begin again.

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in 3rd loop in each st around. Join with a sl st in first sc. [30 sc]

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, PB, ch 1, sk next st * sc next 4 sts, PB; rep from * to last 3 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in last 2 sts. Join with a sl st in first sc. [24 sc, 6 beads/ch-1 sps]

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in each sc and SCS in each beaded st around. Join with a sl st in first sc. [30 sts]

Round 7: Ch 1, PB, ch 1, sk first st, sc next 4 sts, * PB, ch 1, sk next st, sc next 4 sts; rep from * around. Join with a sl st in first beaded st. [24 sc, 6 beads/ch-1 sps]

Round 8: Rep round 6.

Rounds 9: Ch 1, sc in first 3 sts, PB, ch 1, sk next st, * sc next 4 sts, PB, ch 1, sk next st; rep from * to last st, sc in last st. Join with a sl st in first sc. [24 sc, 6 beads/ch-1 sps]

Round 10: Rep round 6.

Round 11: Ch 3, sk first st, sc in next st, PM in ch-3 sp, * ch 1, sk next st, sc; rep from * to last st. Do not join. [15 sc, 15 ch sps]

Round 12: Ch 1, sc in marked ch-sp, PM in sc, * ch 1, sk next st, sc in ch-sp; rep from * around. Do not join. [16 sc, 15 ch sps]

NOTE: If you wish to add the tiny wooden ring, you will need to add it to the 8th sc st in round 13. Simply place the ring between your st and hook and sc through the ring (see photos below). There should still be a ch-1 sp on either side of the sc st through the ring. In round 14, you will work into the ch-1 sps as if the ring wasn’t there.

Rounds 13-15: Ch 1, sk marked st, sc next ch-sp, PM in sc, * ch 1, sk next st, sc next ch sp; rep from * around. Do not join. [16 sc, 15 ch sps]

After completing Round 15, ch 1, sk marked st and next ch sp, sl st in next sc. FO and weave in your tails.

NOTE: If you added the mini wooden ring and you want to add a tassel to it, simply wrap about 3 fingers 4-5 times and cut the bottoms to create tassel tails. Then slide one end of all ends into the ring and fold them in half.

Then cut a length of yarn about 5" in length and thread onto your yarn needle. Using your yarn needle, sew around the top of the tassel tails to secure them to the bag and tie the ends inside the bag to hide. Cut ends evenly to desired length.

Sew purse to kiss clasp using your tapestry needle and the matching embroidery thread. I use the same method for sewing the piece to the kiss clasp as I do in this video.
