The Fastest Crochet Beanie EVER! Great for Craft Fair Prep

PIN it here!

I dubbed this the “Speedy Beanie” because it works up in a flash, taking me only 25 minutes from start to finish to whip up!

It’s the perfect unisex beanie

Not only does this hat work up super fast, the squishy texture is perfect for a unisex hat. (I know I can’t be the only one who struggles with making hats for the menfolk!) It also can easily be converted into a slouchy style hat, by simply making the repeating rounds one extra time!

You can see here that it makes a perfect beanie for both men and women! Pictured is Yarn Bee Dream Supreme in the color Charcoal.

It’s perfect for Craft Fair prep

To me, this is the perfect market prep crochet hat, because I can make 2 in an hour—and since I profit at least $20 per hat, that’s $40 for 1 hour’s worth of work! Add in the fact that it’s the perfect unisex beanie, you just cannot go wrong making these awesome beanies for your next craft fair.

How I make $40-$50 an hour with this hat

You will notice that the pattern calls for only 70-80 yards of a super bulky weight yarn, and I will give you tips for how you can make even more money per hat by choosing the right bulky yarn.

My personal favorite is Yarn Bee Dream Supreme, which is about $10 a ball regular price. If you go when Hobby Lobby runs a sale for 30% off every other week, you can get 1 ball for $7. The best part is that these balls of yarn have 144 yards in them, so you can get 2 hats out of your $7 skein of yarn, making it even MORE profitable when you sell this hat.

Yarn Bee Dream Supreme lives up to its name. It is super soft and squishy and an absolute dream to crochet with! Pictured is the color Weathered Cedar.

the most profitable yarn

When I use Yarn Bee Dream Supreme, each hat only costs me around $5 to make (after embellishing my hat). I sell them for $30, meaning a whopping $25 profit. Multiply that times 2, and I make $50 an hour making this hat!

My bestselling colorway for 4 years and counting

I just had my biggest market of the year this past Saturday, and this hat was a huge hit. I will say that for the past 4 years now, Lion Brand Woolease Thick & Quick in the color Fossil has been my #1 bestselling colorway, so even though I don’t make as much per hat, I still make the most in this colorway because it sells out every time. Just throwing that out there!

add a sense of luxury with alpaca at no additional cost

I also really like Yarn Bee’s Effortless Bulky that has a touch of alpaca yarn in it for this hat. People really loved the ones with alpaca in them because it made them feel like they were getting a steal of a deal (but the yarn isn’t any more expensive LOL).

Pictured is Yarn Bee Effortless Bulky with a touch of alpaca in the color Burnt Autumn.

this is the easiest pattern ever!

One more thing I want to mention before jumping into the pattern is that this is an advanced beginner pattern. It uses the most basic beginner stitches, but this luscious texture develops by intentionally turning your work at various places and by placing your stitches deliberately in specific loops. In short, it’s a SUPER easy pattern that is SUPER easy to remember! WOOT WOOT!

Okay, enough of my rambling! Let’s make it!

I have included a full YouTube video tutorial to help with the most difficult portions of this pattern. You can watch it here:

Special terminology

  • 3rd Loop - The 3rd loop st will be worked as normal except where you place your hook will be different. The 3rd loop is located behind the “V”, and is the horizontal bar that runs parallel to the back loop of the st. You wil insert your hook from top to bottom, creating your st as you usually would. This process pushes the “V” towards you, giving your work a beautiful texture on the RS. (NOTE: In this pattern you will never access the 3rd loop from the side facing you. If you find that is where the 3rd loop is, check to be sure you turned your work as instructed. To visualize this process, see my video.)

  • Invisible Slip Stitch - Take your working yarn to the back of your work, behind your first st. Remove your hook from your working loop and insert your hook from back to front in the first st of the round. Grab your working loop and put it on your hook, drawing the loop to the back of your work. Continue on as usual. To visualize this process, see my video.

  • Invisible Join - Cut your working yarn, leaving yourself a tail of about 6 inches. Pull up on your working loop until your working yarn comes all the way out of your last st. Thread your tail onto a yarn needle and insert the needle from front to back under both loops of your first st; then insert your needle into the BLO of your last st, taking your tail to the back of your work. Weave in your tail extremely well so it does not come undone. To visualize this process, see my video.

pattern notes

  • The first st of every round is the same st as joining.

  • Beginning chs do not count as a st in this pattern.

  • Be sure to pay attention to the type of join at the end of each round. As a rule of thumb, if the RS of your hat is facing, you do an Invisible sl st; if the WS of your hat is facing, you do a regular sl st (does not apply to Rounds 1-3). You will not make an Invisible Join until the very last round.

  • Be sure to count your sts after every round, as it is very easy to increase by working into the sl sts when turning your work.

Gauge

Diameter should measure approx. 6.5-7 inches after completing Rounds 1-3. If your diameter measures differently, you need to adjust your hook size accordingly and begin again.

Finished measurements

Hat is made to fit the average adult-sized head, measuring approx. 21-24 inches in circumference and approx. 8.5-9 inches in length.

Instructions

Hat is worked from top to bottom in the round, occasionally turning your work and working in various loops to create the unique texture.

Round 1: Ch 4, sl st in the 4th ch from your hook to create a ring. Working inside of the ring and around your beginning tail simultaneously, ch 2, 12 dc inside the ring. Join with a sl st in first dc. [12 dc] Pull the beginning tail to make the center hole smaller.

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st in first dc. [24 dc]

Round 3: Ch 2, * 2 dc, dc; rep from * around. Join with a sl st in first dc. [36 dc]

Gauge Check: At this point, the diameter of your hat should measure approx. 6.5-7 inches. If yours does not, adjust your hook size accordingly and begin again (i.e., if your diameter measures less than 6.5 in., go up in hook size and begin again. If your diameter is larger than 7 in., go down in hook size and begin again.)

Round 4 (WS): Ch 1, turn, hdc in the FLO of each st around. Join with a sl st in first hdc. [36 hdc]

Round 5 (RS): Ch 1, turn, hdc in the BLO of each st around. Join with an Invisible sl st in first hdc. [36 hdc]

Round 6 (RS): Ch 1, dc in the 3rd loop of each st around. Join with an Invisible sl st in first dc. [36 dc]

Round 7 (WS): Ch 1, turn, hdc in the FLO of each st around. Join with a sl st in first hdc. [36 hdc]

Round 8 (RS): Ch 1, turn, hdc in the BLO of each st around. Join with an Invisible sl st in first hdc. [36 hdc]

Rounds 9-11: Rep Rounds 6-8 once more. (NOTE: For a slouchy version, rep Rounds 6-8 twice more.)

Round 12 (RS): Ch 1, sc 3rd loop in each st around. Make an Invisible Join and weave in tail very well.

Use your beginning tail to sew a pom-pom button to the inside of your hat, or weave in if desired. (NOTE: if your yarn is too thick to sew the button on, gently split the ply of the yarn in half to sew with. To visualize this, see my video.
