The Super Santa Scarf Hat ~ Knitting Machine Tutorial

PIN it here!

Someone asked how to make a super long Santa hat so it could double as a scarf, and of course I set out to make one!

This knitting machine pattern is actually not a hard concept to follow at all, and it can be tweaked to your desired length very easily. It would also be really fun to add stripes and elf ears as an elf hat, or as a giant Christmas tree with all the trimmings glued/sewn onto it! It’s only limited by your creativity, and I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I will say that I included a child sized version in my row counts, but I want to warn you that I would not do it for small children or toddlers because they could inadvertently choke themselves. So please be mindful of this warning when you are making your hats!

If you are interested in making a regular sized Santa hat, see my post here.

Let’s make it!

Supplies Needed:

-Approx. 500-600 yds of hat/scarf body color, depending on which size you make

-Approx. 40-60 yds of hat brim color, depending on which size you make

-Enough waste yarn for 5 rows

-A 4.25 mm crochet hook, or size needed to complete slip stitches

-Scissors, yarn needle, tape measure

Gauge:

5 rows = approx. 1" using medium tension

Finished Measurements:

Listed respectively with each size’s recipe. Measurements are taken with tube slightly stretched and laying flat, after brim has been doubled and top has been cinched closed.

Instructions:

Adult Santa Scarf Hat

Cast on using main color for hat body and make 335 rows for a 72" scarf, or 279 rows for a 60" scarf. Cut yarn and change to brim color. Make 40 rows of brim color. Cut yarn and add waste yarn. Make 5 rows of waste yarn and cast off. Follow assembly instructions below.

Child Santa Scarf Hat

Cast on using main color for hat body and make 200 rows for a 45" scarf. Cut yarn and change to brim color. Make 30 rows of brim color. Cut yarn and add waste yarn. Make 5 rows of waste yarn and cast off. Follow assembly instructions below.

Assembly

All hats will be assembled this way, regardless of the size you choose to make.

Step 1: After casting off, slightly unroll a small portion of the scarf to expose the brim portion. Make sure the wrong side of your hat is facing you. Now roll up brim so that row 1 and row 30/40 of the brim colors meet. To visualize this, see my video.

Step 2: Beginning after the loose strands, use your crochet hook to slip stitch the brim stitches together, as shown in my video.

Step 3: Hide tails inside brim.

Step 4: Carefully unroll rest of scarf portion until you reach the opposite end. Using tail, cinch cast-on end closed. Turn scarf hat right-side-out and add your yarn needle to remaining tail. Reinforce the stitches as shown in my video. Knot to secure and bring excess to inside of hat. Add pom button and pom-pom if desired. See my trick for adding pom-poms here
