Boho Crochet Lip Balm Holder

If you are constantly digging around your bag for your tube of lip balm, you are going to love this crochet project!

It’s fast and fun to make

This lil’ boho lip balm cozy puts the FUN in functional! The beaded tassel adds boho flair, and the flap closure keeps your lip balm snug as a bug. No more lost lip balm! I love the little swivel clasp that allows you to clip it to your purse (or even your belt loop, backpack, keychain, wristlet…you name it!).

They are great for craft fairs

Not only are they great for personal use, but they are a fabulous add on item to include in your craft fair prep. They require very little in supplies and work up in a snap. I like to throw some organic beeswax lip balm in there to add value and help my customers visualize what it is supposed to be. I like to buy the lip balm in bulk here.

they make great gifts

It’s sometimes really hard to know what to make people for gifting, but you really can’t go wrong with useful items. Lip balm and hand sanitizer are two of the most-used items in my purse right now, thanks to flu season and the frigidly cold and dry winter we are having, and I can guarantee they are probably some of the most-used items that your friends are carrying right now. That’s what makes them such a great gift set!

I made many for Christmas this past year, and everyone who received it loved it. I included a little tube of organic beeswax lip balm and paired it with a matching hand sanitizer holder.

The matching hand sanitizer holder

As a side note, if you missed my email announcing my Sanitzer Sling 2.0 pattern revamp, you can find the full video tutorial here and the printable pdf in both Etsy and Ravelry. I improved an old pattern that was originally written using more supplies and held a 3.0 fl oz bottle of sanitizer (which I discovered later was apparently VERY hard to find).

both projects have no ends to weave in

Not only did I make it using fewer supplies and the more readily available 2.0 fl oz bottles, I made it to wear you had ZERO ends to weave in. I also made the lip balm cozy so that there’s no ends to weave in. If you’re like me, you HATE, loathe and abominate weaving in ends, so I really did it for the sake of all of our sanity. You’re welcome! Haha!

they are great for valentines day gifting

I also want to mention that the lip balm cozies really would make an adorable little Valentine's Day gift exchange for kids of all ages, but especially the older ones who are “too old” for stuffed animals and the like, but you still want to give them with a little gift.

I honestly think it would even make a great gift to give to your girlfriends for “Galentines”, because why not?! Add a tinted lip balm to brighten their lips, and hopefully brighten their day, too!

add the free printable gift tag with your cozy

I even made some cute little printable tags you could add with your gift to make it a little more fun. For lip balm options, Walmart usually has a large package of Lip Smackers around this time of year with a bunch of different flavors. I could really see some tween and teen girls loving the boho look and clipping it onto their backpack or belt loop at school and exchanging them with their girlfriends.

Enough of my rambling! Let’s make it!

special terminology

  • Invisible Slip Stitch - Remove hook from working loop. Take working yarn tail to back of work. Insert hook from back to front in first st of round and hook working loop onto your hook. Draw working loop to back of work and continue as usual. To visualize this st, see my video linked below.

Pattern notes

  • Any beginning chs will not count as a st throughout.

  • You will be working in the continuous round for this pattern and will need a SM to keep track of the first st of every round.

  • You will need to try the cozy on your lip balm a few times as you go to make sure it’s fitting properly.

gauge

8 sc and 9 rows = 2 inches

This pattern is fairly flexible when it comes to gauge. I recommend trying your piece on your lip balm after completing a few rounds to make sure it’s fitting properly before moving on. You will need to adjust your hook size at this point and start over if necessary.

finished measurements

Finished cozy measures approx. 3 inches in length and 1.25 inches in width with the cozy empty and lying flat, not including the swivel clasp.

instructions

Cozy is worked in both the round and the row, from bottom to flap, adding rounds around the entire piece at the end.

Round 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not sl st to join. [6 sc]

Round 2: 2 sc in first st, PM in first st, 2 sc in each st around. Join with an Invisible sl st. [12 sc]

We will be working in the continuous round from here on out. Place a SM in the first st of each round, moving it as you go.

Round 3: Working in the BLO, sc in each st around. [12 sc BLO]

Round 4: Working through both loops, sc in each st around. [12 sc]

Rep Round 4 until your cozy reaches the bottom of the cap of your lip balm. I did a total of 15 rounds using the Peaches N’ Creme Stripey yarn; but only 13 rounds using a thicker cotton like I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby. The number of rounds you do will depend on the thickness of your yarn.

add the swivel clasp

Now we will be adding the swivel clasp and working in the row for the strap closure.

Sk marked st and sl st into the next st. You will be working into this sl st in the next row.

Row 1: Ch 1, turn, place the D-ring of the swivel clasp behind your work. Going through both your sts and the D-ring simultaneously sc in first 3 sts. [3 sc]

Rows 2-8: Ch 1, turn, sc across. [3 sc]

Row 9: Ch 1, turn, sc, ch 1, sk 1, sc in last st. [2 sc, 1 ch-1 sp]

Now we will work around the strap and mouth of the piece to clean up the sts and shape the strap a bit.

Finishing Round 1: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, {sc, ch 2, sc} complete brackets in ch-1 sp, sc in last st, turn to continue working down the strap, sc in each row of strap, sc in 9 sts of mouth of piece, sc in each row of strap until you reach where you began. [27 sc, 1 ch-2 sp]

Finishing Round 2: Sl st into each st of last round. Bring your working loop to the back of your work and cut your yarn, leaving yourself a long tail. Take your tail through the working loop to knot it off and weave your tail to the ch-2 sp of the WS of the strap but do not cut excess. (NOTE: We will be using this tail to secure the tassel tails later.)

create your tassel

  • Cut 4 strands of yarn 4 inches in length to create tassel tails.

  • Take one end of all 4 strands through the ch-2 sp of the strap, making tails even at the bottom.

  • Thread tail you left yourself at the end of the 2nd Finishing Round onto a yarn needle. Make sure the WS of the strap is facing you.

  • Follow the photos below for how to tie the knot around the tassel to secure it in place. Weave the remaining tail back into the sts on the WS of the strap and cut off excess, or you can hide the excess within the tassel itself. (NOTE: The photos are of a different project, but the process remains the same.)

Place your lip balm inside the piece and sew the bead where the button hole meets the front center. You want it to be a snug fit! Button the strap to the piece and trim the tassel tails to the desired length. Treat tails with fray check if desired.
