Addi Sweetheart Headband
This adorable headband works up super quickly and takes about half the yarn that most Addi ear warmers use!

This headband uses a similar concept to my Addi Turban Hat, but gives the wearer the freedom to choose to wear their hair up or down.
I designed it to be wide like ear warmers so that it could gather in the front and make a nice faux bow. It is a single layer tube, making it great for those who live in a warmer climate but still want cute ear warmers/headbands.
I made some using a crocheted strip of fabric to cover up the gathered area, but I also made some using a strip of faux leather and I really love how adorable they look! I am most definitely adding these to my upcoming vendor market prep for both Spring and Fall because I think they are the perfect solution for in-between temps that are just cool enough to want to cover your ears, but not freezing cold.
I think you are going to be addicted to making them after you see how easy, quick and CUTE they work up!
Let’s make this thing!
Supplies Needed:
-46 or 48 pin circular knitting machine (I am using the Addi King)
-80-90 yards of worsted weight yarn for the main color
-15-20 yards of waste yarn
-Size G 4.25 mm hook
-Scrap amount of faux leather/vinyl or ribbon (optional)
-Yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape
Terms Used and Abbreviations:
Pattern is written in US terminology.
Begin(ning) - beg
Chain(s) - ch(s)
Fasten Off - FO
Repeat - Rep
Single Crochet - sc
Slip Stitch - sl st
Stitch(es) - st(s)
Gauge:
15 sts and 20 rows = 4" (10 cm) using medium tension for knitted portion. Gauge for crocheted portion is not imperative since you will be crocheting according to measurements.
Finished Measurements:
Designed to fit adult sized heads 21-23" (53-58 cm) in circumference. Unfinished tube should measure approx. 10" (25 cm).
Pattern Notes:
-All cast-on and cast-off methods used in this pattern will be the provisional (basic) cast-on and cast-off methods.
-You will need to be able to read and follow basic beginner crochet pattern instructions.
-You will need to understand basic sewing techniques.
-I have included a YouTube video tutorial for help with the most difficult portions of the pattern. You can find the video here:
Instructions:
Headband is made by creating a tube and making rounds of sc on each end to pick up the sts. The headband is then cinched in the middle and wrapped with either a crocheted strip of fabric or a faux leather/vinyl strip of fabric.
Headband
1) Cast on with waste yarn and knit 5 rows.
2) Cut yarn and change to main color, leaving yourself about 5 yds of excess tail for crocheting and sewing purposes later.
3) Knit 50 more rows.
4) Cut main color, leaving another 5 yds of excess tail for crocheting and sewing purposes later.
5) Add waste yarn. Knit 5 more rows.
6) Cast off.
Assembly
1) Beg at either end and insert your hook into the first st nearest the excess tail you left yourself. Draw up a loop.
2) Ch 1, sc loosely in same st and in each st around. Join with a sl st in first sc and FO, leaving a tail of approx. 10" (25 cm). [46 sc] To visualize this, see my video.
3) Remove waste yarn.
4) Rep steps 1-3 to opposite end of tube.
5) Using a Styrofoam head form, place your tube so that the tails leftover are in the center front of the form.
6) Gently gather the tube in the center so that it looks similar to a bow. Thread your yarn needle to the excess tail from either end and tack the layers together so it stays gathered. Tie ends together to secure and cut off excess.
7) Wrap strip of faux leather or crocheted strip around gathered area and hot glue or sew into place.
Crocheted strip
I decided to make one version using a crocheted strip to wrap around the center of the gathered portion. In my YouTube video I made the strip approx. 2" wide and 3.5" long, but if I make any more I will likely make it a bit thinner (between 1-1.5" wide). I will include the same pattern I used in my YouTube video for the sake of consistency, but you could also make your foundation ch until it measures the width you desire (in my case, 1-2"), and then continue making rows of sc until the piece measures approx. 3.5" (or however long you desire it to be). To visualize this, see my video.
Row 1: Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across. [5 sc]
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. [5sc]
Rep row 2 until you get the desired measurement. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing purposes.
Wrap crocheted strip around gathered area so that the ends meet in the back. Thread your yarn needle onto long tail and use the mattress st to join the ends together. Knot off and weave in tails.
The mattress st is achieved by inserting your needle from inner to outer in every st across like a corset and then pulling tightly to sew the seam together seamlessly.
You can see the similarities to a corset being laced in this photo.
