The Bowtique Pocket

Tis’ the season to be making beautiful handmade gifts!

We all like adding special touches to our Christmas gifts, and we all like giving something we think the recipient will love and use. Sometimes it is very hard to decide what to make, and not everyone has the hours and hours needed in order to make a blanket.

This summer I came up with several designs that I thought would be very useful for a summer wardrobe. My most popular by far were my crochet wrist wallets. I made several styles, with a beaded bracelet version called The Petite Pocket (pictured below) being the favorite style. The Petite Pocket can be found for free on my blog and YouTube channel as well!

Then I got the idea for a wrist wallet that could double as a cup cozy AND a gift card holder! The multi functionality of this crochet project makes for a wonderful gift. If you know someone who loves coffee, simply put a gift card to their favorite coffee shop inside the wrist wallet and slide it onto a coffee tumbler. Then let them know that not only can it be used for a coffee cozy to help protect their hands while drinking coffee, it can be used as a wrist wallet for when they go shopping or running errands and want to keep their hands free!

I have also been able to slide the wrist wallet onto thinner water tumblers, so if you know a person who hates coffee but loves water tumblers, that would also be a nice gift option. I have personally given these as gifts and people absolutely love them!

This one I made to go on a skinny water tumbler. I made it out of Lion Brand Coboo, which is soft and silky cotton, bamboo and silk blend.

I have another version of a wrist wallet called The Posh Pocket, if you would prefer a different look:

Wrist wallets are great for anyone you know who loves to travel or shop. It’s also a nice gift for moms who carry a lot of things, like diaper bags and car seats, etc. and who do not want to carry a purse on top of everything else they are carrying. I have also had several people tell me that they like to wear them when they go to concerts or festivals. You could also realistically make this for your child’s teachers, who may appreciate such a useful gift—you may even want to make one for yourself! I have often wished I had something like this myself when going out on a date or when I have my vendor market events.

Let’s make it!!

Supplies Needed:

- 50- 75 yds of cotton/cotton blend DK yarn (size 3), such as Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend or Lion Brand Coboo. If you choose to use Coboo, you may need to go up a hook size or crochet more loosely. (Note: You could also use acrylic yarn, but it will stretch quite a bit.)

- Crochet hook size F 3.75 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge)

- 2.5” (6.4 cm) piece of ribbon or leather for center embellishment (optional)

- 1 8 or 10 mm bead for button (or you could use a button, but it would need to be size 7/16”/11 mm)

Steps 1-3 of adding a beaded button

Begin Cuff

Your Bowtique Pocket will need to be emptied prior to putting it on/taking it off. It is meant to fit very snugly on the wrist, so if you have arthritis in your hands, you may want to add chs to your beginning cuff row.

Turn your work so that you are facing the backside of the pocket. The following will be worked from side to side in the BLO/FLO that remain from our edging round.

Ch 29. Sl st into the same remaining loop on the opposite side of the back of the pocket, being very careful not to twist your ch. [29 ch sts]

 Row 1:

Sl st into the next loop down the pocket side. Turn. Place 1 sc in the “back bone/hump”  in each ch st across, being careful not to twist your ch. Sl st into the next remaining loop.  [29 sc] NOTE: It is very important to do your sts in the back bone here. It will look more polished.

Row 2:

Sl st into the next loop down the pocket side. Turn. Place 1 sc in each st across. Sl st into the next remaining loop. [29 sc]

Rows 3-17 (thinner bow), 3-21 (wider bow):

Repeat row 2. [29 sc]

FO and weave in tails.

Making the Bow

Place a st marker in the 15th st on rows 1, 9, and 17 (thinner bow)  or rows 1, 11, and 21 (wider bow). This marks the very center of your cuff. Bring the st markers up towards the top to meet together. This is where you will want to sew the bow to cinch it shut. I sew the center st, and 1 st on each side of the center st. FO and weave in tails. (see photos)

Cut your ribbon or leather piece to be approximately 2.5” (6.4 cm) long. Wrap the ribbon around the cinched area and sew together along the bottom, using your clear nylon thread and sewing needle. Cut off any excess.
